Stakeholders vs Shareholders

Based in Ottawa, Janet serves as national chair of TELUS' Community Boards, further developing and refining TELUS' innovative leadership with its unique corporate philanthropy model.

From October 2003 - January 2009, Janet was executive vice-president of Corporate Affairs at TELUS and led a national team responsible for legal, government and regulatory affairs as well as corporate communications and corporate philanthropy.

Janet was president of the Canadian Cable Television Association prior to joining TELUS. With more than 20 years of government and regulatory experience, Janet has held senior leadership positions at AT&T Canada, the CRTC and the Consumer's Association of Canada.

In addition to a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University in 1975, Janet received a Master of Economics in 1976 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1981 from the University of Toronto. She was called to the Ontario Bar in April 1983. In 2005, Janet became a certified director through the Director's Education Program offered by ICD.

As an active member of the Ottawa community, she is a member of the Board of the Great Canadian Theatre Company, Business for the Arts, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, the Canadian Film Centre, the International Institute of Communications (IIC), the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) and the TELUS Ottawa Community Board. She is also Chair of the National Arts Centre Gala, Chair of the United Way's Leadership Table on Homelessness and a member of the Heart Truth Leadership Council and Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Ottawa United Way/Centraide.

Janet was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002. The Canadian Women in Communications Organization named Janet "Woman of the Year 2001". The Women's Executive Network named Janet one of Canada's Most Powerful Women - Top 100 for 2004, 2005 and 2006 and inducted her into the Women's Executive Network Hall of Fame in 2007. Janet was named Businesswoman of the Year (corporate) 2005 by the Women's Business Network, and in 2006 was named Woman Leader of the Year by Federated Press. In 2008, Janet was awarded the United Way Community Builder Award for Volunteer of the Year.
